Frequently asked questions
About Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy and Hypnoanalysis, at The Basingstoke Hypnotherapy Pratice. With Helen McElroy Miah, Advanced Diploma in Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnosis?
“A state of relaxation and concentration at one with a state of heightened awareness induced by suggestion” It is a non-addictive power for good and is a totally natural altered state of awareness.

Are there some people that cannot be hypnotised?
No. (Except mentally handicapped, although the degree varies from person to person.

Are any drugs or tablets used?
No.

Will I be aware of what is happening?

Yes. Most people are surprised to remember everything that has happened during the therapy.

So I'm not asleep then?
No, you are simply extremely relaxed.

Is there any cause at all for concern?
None at all. Hypnosis is a proven therapeutic aid.

How many visits will I need?

Simple problems, such as smoking, nail biting, slimming, pre-test nerves etc usually require only one or two sessions and the success rate is surprisingly high. More deep-rooted psychological problems such as phobias require 'analytical' rather than 'suggestion' therapy, usually consisting of approximately 8-12 weekly sessions.

Can I be influenced to do anything against my will or nature?
Absolutley not. In fact you would be shocked out of the hypnotic state immediately if any inappropriate suggestion was made to you.

Can I bring someone with me into the consultation?
Yes, of course.

Can you help with medical problems?
If you think your problem may be medical, it is essential that you consult your GP first.

Which is the top Hypnotherapy organisation in the UK?

There isn't one! . . In the UK no hypnotherapy organisations or training schools have precedence over any of the others. The largest training school in the UK however, is the IAH, which has trained thousands of hypnotherapists since it started in 1981, and currently has the largest membership.

"Firstly, I must apologise for the rather long delay - I have been enjoying the fruits of your labour and have somewhat forgotten what it is like to be so frustrated and annoyed by the simple sounds of chewing and watching people pull their hair.....Thank you for everything! I would never have believed that the cause of my irritations were rooted in a memory. After having been annoyed to no-end from hearing people chew, I now hardly notice. It makes for a much happier and more peaceful life. My road rage has also disappeared....Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.....I am now a firm beleiver in the healing powers of the mind and what a little bit of therapy can do for you......I'm going out for dinner!" Mr H - Wilts
