Resolve your phobia in Basingstoke with hypnosis
From Helen McElroy MIAPH, Advanced Diploma in Hypnotherapy
A Phobia is: "an external symbolic interpretation
of an internal anxiety."
When somebody finds themselves in a situation where they feel very
strong and intense emotions, their 'psyche' has the ability to “bottle
up” or repress those emotions. Once those emotions have been repressed
the psyche will create a phobia - this is the subconscious’ way of
trying to avoid being in a situation where they might experience these feelings
again.
For example if you were trapped in a cupboard as a child, the feelings it
created could be so strong that you repressed the whole memory and a phobia
was created – claustrophobia – it makes sense –you will
certainly not get trapped in any small spaces again!
What is the difference between a fear and a phobia?
The main difference between a fear and a phobia is in the severity of the
emotional reaction: a strong dislike of flying is a fear, whereas a pathological
fear (an intense, uncontrollable, unendurable, physical fear) is considered
to be a phobia.
Although some phobias seem to serve an obvious purpose (fear of heights,
drowning etc.) some appear to make no sense at all! - but all phobias do
serve a purpose. In therapy, we can find the originating cause (the unconscious
conflict) of the phobia and release it - and when the emotions are released,
the phobia disappears. Most phobias are not directly related to the cause
of the emotion, they are symbolic of it. For example the fear of flying
is usually a fear of being out of control, rather than directly linked to
the survival of a plane crash.
What can I do to help myself?
The best way to live with a phobia is to ignore it and to distract yourself
from it. I know that is easier said than done, but the more you think about
it, the bigger an issue it becomes in your mind and the more it takes over
your life.
You may find it helps you in the short term to read about your phobia and
gain some understanding of it. Also it is good to know you are not alone
with your phobia! But the more time you spend thinking about it, the more
validity you are giving it, so the more emotion you creating around it.
Why is there such a varying success rate with treating phobias?
Some types of therapy help you to live with your phobia easier, others try
to “get around” it by linking positive thoughts to the situation.
The difficulty with this is that often the psyche will produce a new phobia
in its place, because the repressed emotion is still trapped inside your
mind. Analytical Hypnotherapy can find the cause of the problem and when
it does, the original emotion is released and the phobia disappears completely-
because there is nothing driving it anymore.
The only way to CURE a phobia is to release the bottled up emotions
that are causing it.
The difficulty is most of the time, the bottled up emotions are completely
hidden in the depths of the person’s subconscious mind. Some people
call the process repression, or denial, or disavowal or even dissociation...but
the effect is the same - the sufferer has no conscious awareness of the
emotions or experiences that are bottled up Pure Hypnoanalysis can - sometimes
quite easily gain access to and release these emotions which will then bring
about a complete and lasting release.
The process of Pure Hypnoanalysis requires a strong bond of trust and rapport
being created between the therapist and the client.
Whilst in a deep and relaxed state, we slowly link thoughts and experiences
back in time by talking about them until we come to the bottled up or repressed
emotions. When we get to these emotions, the client can release and talk
them through in a safe and trusted environment until they are resolved.
Pure Hypnoanalysis takes place weekly over a period of 6-12 weeks.
