Stress is the feeling of being under too much emotional pressure. When you are under too much pressure this can turn into stress. Some stress can motivate you and make you higher achieving, but too much stress can cause unwanted symptoms. Stress can be caused by work, relationships and or money problems. It can get in the way of sorting out these problems, and can affect everything you do, including the way you behave, think and even how your body works.
Stress can also impact on the immune system, leaving you run down and vulnerable to illness in the longer term.
Common symptoms of stress may be:
Low self esteem
Feeling tense / uptight
Loss of appetite
Racing thoughts / things going constantly round in your head
Unable to cope
Drinking more alcohol
You may also suffer from some physical symptoms such as headaches, sweating, physical tension, pain or dizziness.
Stress is a normal response to feelings of threat or occasional pressure. It is the “fight or flight” response. Usually, once the pressured situation is over the physical response to stress, the hormones in your body return to normal, however if you are under prolonged stress and pressure, these hormones can remain in your body, causing some or even all of the symptoms described above.
